Though grocery prices are inflated to an all time high, no one should have to skimp out on health for price. Here are three nutritious foods that you should be buying, why you should continue to buy them, and how to save.
1. Eggs. Eggs are one of the best sources of protein available. Though a dozen eggs used to cost mere pennies, some brands are now up to $6! The price hike is for a variety of reasons-higher demand, inflation, organic brands, and some eggs now contain Omega 3’s. By buying eggs from a local farmer’s market you can save a ton of money. If you are concerned about Omega 3’s, try a supplement instead.
2. Milk. Milk not only contains calcium, but Vitamin D, protein, and other essential minerals. One report states that milk has inflated up to 23% in one year! Instead of skipping on this nutritious drink try buying in bulk if you have a family to feed. If you are single then buying skim milk may save you up to 10%. The savings will amount compared to buying a few smaller cartons throughout the week. You can also try diluting milk with about 1/3 of water to get your money’s and health’s worth.
3. Vegetables. Veggies are expensive, especially organic ones. Red, yellow, and orange bell peppers can reach up to $7 for one pepper. If you are considering dropping these nutritious vegetables, think again. They are not only great additions to salads and stir fries, but contain high amounts of Vitamin C, A, B, and fiber. If you have a garden, consider growing your own. Not only will they be organic but you can probably get about 20 peppers off of one plant. If you don’t have room for a garden then venture out of local farmers markets or keep your eye out for special sales during their peak season.
The average family spends about 15% of their take home pay on groceries. Because of the ever increasing price of food this number continues to rise while many people’s pay check does not. By cutting coupons, shopping for deals, growing your own foods, and budgeting you will be well on your way to slashing those prices but keeping a nutritious diet.
