5 Foods To Make You Smarter

Do you ever walk into a room to do something and by the time you get there you wonder what it is you were going to do? Maybe these five “brain foods” will help.

1. Fish: Fish contains extremely high levels of omega 3 fats, which are essential to brain health. Omega 3 fatty acids play a huge role in the formation of the membrane of brain cells through which nerve signals pass. If you don’t like the taste of fish try an omega 3 supplement.

2. DHA fortified foods: A study was recently done on women who ate DHA fortified cereal bars during their last trimester in pregnancy compared to those that ate normal cereal bars. It was found that the children whose mothers at the DHA fortified bars had much better problem solving skills when they were around nine months old than those whose mothers at the non fortified bars.

3. Peanuts. Peanuts contain ACh, or Acetylcholine, which may help maintain your memory. Other foods which contain ACh include egg yolks, meat, and milk.

4. Whole grains. Whole grain foods such as bread contain a significant amount of iron, which is needed to carry oxygen to brain cells. A study done on girls in the UK found a relationship between low iron in the body and poor cognitive function. Iron supplements are also a great way to ensure you are getting enough of this essential mineral.

5. Blueberries. Blueberries not only contain large doses of antioxidants which minimize damage to our brain cells, but they are also thought to improve short term memory loss.

Although it is important to recognize the foods that can improve your brain function, it is just as important to cut out foods that are damaging to your brain. Some of these include foods like white bread, pop, junk foods, and alcoholic beverages. As a rule of thumb, try to stick with whole grain and organic healthy foods such as fresh vegetables, fruit, and lean meats or fish. Also make sure you are taking a multivitamin supplement each day in order insure you are receiving the essential minerals and nutrients to achieve optimum brain health.
