Chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart diseases kill millions of people each year. Fortunately most of them are preventable. Here are five tips on preventing chronic diseases.
1. Stop smoking. Smoking is the leading cause of cancer and can cause other problems such as emphysema. By quitting you will be adding years on to your life and will feel much healthier. Even if you have been smoking for a number of years and decide to quit you will start to notice the benefits within a few days.
2. Avoid alcohol. Drinking alcohol can lead to chronic liver disease and other health problems. Even moderate alcohol consumption can lead to neurological problems so limiting consumption to one drink a day can be extremely beneficial.
3. Eat right. A poor diet can lead to many health problems, one of the main ones being diabetes. Even those that already have this disease can minimize the effects by following a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Highly processed foods and sugar should be avoided as much as possible.
4. Exercise regularly. Exercise is one of the greatest preventative measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Regular physical exercise can prevent such things as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancers, and diabetes.
5. Get an annual check up. Even if you feel fine making a point of getting a yearly check up by a doctor is a great way to ensure that you are healthy. If there is anything wrong your doctor can diagnose and treat the problem hopefully before it gets worse.
