Colds and flu can really take a strip out of you and being sick is no fun for anyone.  Obviously preventing these illnesses through a robust immune system is the best way to go, but if you already feel a bug coming on there are things you can do to speed your recovery.

Drinking plenty of fluids is also important to beating a bug.  Staying hydrated with warm soothing liquids like hot teas can be a real life saver.  These drinks can soothe the throat and even relive congestion in the nasal passages.

A hot, steamy shower is likewise a great idea if you are suffering from congestion.  A shower will help to loosen the phlegm and will just make you feel better overall.

Hot and cold packs can also help to relieve the sinus passages.  Frequent nose blowing and congestion can really do a number on your sinuses making them inflamed.  By applying alternate cold and hot packs you will help to reduce inflammation and pain.

You will also want to load up on vitamin C as soon as you feel the onset of the symptoms.  While the jury is out as to whether or not vitamin C can speed up the healing process once the bug has got you, it has been shown to help speed healing of the membranes in the sinuses.

Finally, a good salt water gargle can do wonders for a sore throat.  Gargling with salt water can help to relieve symptoms of pain and provides a cleansing, antibacterial wash.

Eating plenty of fresh fruits like oranges and good wholesome soups will also help give you the nutrients your body needs to fight of any infections and provide comfort in times of illness.  Make sure to load up on these healthy options for a fast recovery.
