Better Calcium Sources Then Dairy
One common question that nutritionists get asked is if we should avoid dairy products. Many people have been led to believe that dairy products such as milk and cheese are the only good source of calcium. This is solely because the dairy industry has done a great job of promoting their product. The Got Milk? Ads combined with numerous other pro-dairy commercials has brainwashed most people in Western society (and in some other parts of the world) that we simply cannot live a healthy life complete with strong bones and teeth without dairy. Not true.
The fact is that there is no need to rely on a cow for nutrition. There are tons of people worldwide who do not consume milk and are very healthy because they get their calcium from other sources. Most people are actually lactose intolerant without even knowing it which can mean that dairy products are actually causing more harm than good. Of course milk, cheese, and other dairy products are high in calcium which is essential to our well being. Calcium decreases the risk for blood clots, builds strong bones and teeth, aids in muscle contractions, and proper nerve functioning. Interestingly enough there is no evidence that calcium intake alone supports all of these functions. In fact unbiased research suggests that the prevention of calcium loss is even more important than consuming calcium. If it seems hard to believe, that is because since childhood we have been told by tv, magazines, and even our parents that we should drink at least 3 glasses of milk a day to keep our bones strong. You can get calcium from other sources that are much healthier. Broccoli and spinach are both full of calcium and do not accompany some of the health concerns which come with drinking milk.
Drinking milk can arise serious health problems including colic, allergies , drug safety concerns, womens; health concerns such as increased ovarian cancer risk, and heart disease. It is actually much wiser to base your diet on mainly plant sources, many of which will give you the amount of calcium you need. If you must drink milk make sure that it is completely organic and hormone free.
