Chromium is a trace mineral that can be extremely useful to our bodies. It is a component of a compound called glucose tolerance factor (GTF), which basically works with insulin within the body to make sure that glucose is deposited into cells where is can be used to generate energy. Chromium is also essential for the body to break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Healthy amounts of chromium stabilizes blood sugar levels, gives you more energy, supports lean muscle mass, improves circulation, acts as an appetite suppressant, and helps with weight loss.
Chromium can be found in certain food sources but is not always absorbed by the body properly. Whole wheat bread, lean meat, cheese, bananas, broccoli, orange juice, potatoes, red wine, pepper, thyme and other herbs contain chromium but unless you have an extremely balanced diet it may be hard to get enough of this mineral. It is estimated that about 90% of American diets are low in chromium and those who have diabetes or are elderly are at an even higher risk of having this deficiency. Chromium can be taken in a supplement form and the most popular is a Chromium Picolinate supplement. This supplement combines chromium with a metabolite called picolinate. Many individuals find these supplements useful to keep a healthy metabolism and assist in weight loss or weight maintenance while experiencing many other benefits. Chromium picolinate supplements are also great for reducing hunger and craving and it can also improve the amount of lean muscle on your body.
Before taking any kind of supplement, check with your doctor. Although chromium picolinate supplements have been found to be effective for many conditions, check with your doctor first to make sure that it will not react with any other medications that you may be taking.
