Combining The Right Foods

Knowing which foods to combine can seem confusing to some people. There are numerous books and online sites available addressing the advantages to proper food combining-it can all be a little confusing. Protein foods require an acid medium, you should always combine acidic food with alkaline food-the list goes on and on. Although you don’t need to spend your precious time categorizing foods and analyzing lists of whether or not you should be eating them together, it is true that some foods do compliment each other. Here are a few suggestions to try and keep it simple but still get the most out of your diet.

1. Fish & broccoli. Fish and broccoli compliment each other because by combining the active nutrients that fight cancer in both of these foods, it packs about 13 times more punch than when eaten separately. Fish contains selenium, and broccoli contains sulforaphane-together they combine to enhance one another’s amazing cancer fighting abilities in the body.

2. Salsa & Avocado: The power of combining these two foods is a reduction in getting cancer, heart disease, and cataracts. The right kind of fat combined with colorful veggies (such as tomatoes in salsa) helps the body to break down the powerful nutrients in the vegetables. The combination of these foods will also boost the absorption of lycopene found in tomatoes-and increase the amount of antioxidants your body will receive. Try having unsalted, whole grain tortilla chips with organic salsa and home made guacamole as a healthy snack or topping your salad with a few slices of avocado.

3. Nuts & Beer: There’s a reason these two go so well together-together they can help improve heart health. Nuts increase good cholesterol levels in the body and alcohol act as a blood thinner and preventing blood clots which can cause heart attacks. Another advantage to eating nuts with your alcohol is that the fat slows down the absorption of alcohol into your body. Remember, everything in moderation!

Although you do not need to spend hours organizing and grouping your food, there are a few rules of thumb that are no brainers. Do not eat more than one protein food together at one meal-for example meat and cheese. Also, try not to eat carbohydrates with acidic foods-for example bread or potatoes with sour fruit like lemons or limes are not a good combination.
