Cutting out the Extra Sugar in your Diet

When trying to lose weight you know that you need to cut calories, but did you know that some low fat options are high in sugar and artificial flavourings that can make dieting even harder.  Because eating high sugar foods can wreak havoc on the blood sugar and result in sugar highs and crashes, it can make dieting a major challenge.  Even though some foods appear like good diet choices, they may in fact be doing you a huge disservice when it comes to achieving your weight loss goals.

Yogurt:  Yogurt can be a terrific food for dieters.  Yogurt has a variety of nutrients like calcium, magnesium and important all natural helpers such as probiotics.  However, many yogurts, even no fat ones, can be high in sugar.  Instead therefore of opting for a strawberry or peach non-fat yogurt, try a plain one instead.  These can still taste great and can be topped up with some fresh fruit instead.

Salad Dressing:  Premade salad dressings can contain extra sugars and salts as well as a host of artificial ingredients including quite frequently MSG.  If you’re looking to cut down on your sugar and opt for a healthier option, than try making your own dressing.  Using a small amount of olive oil, herbs, garlic and apple cider vinegar you can make a great tasting vinaigrette without loading up on sugar and artificial preservatives.

Soy and Rice Milk:  If you’ve made the switch to soy or rice milk from traditional cow milk than you might think that you’re choosing healthier options already.  You may be, but some rice and soy milks offer flavoured varieties like vanilla and chocolate.  Although these might taste great they are loaded with sugar.  Opt instead for the plain varieties and you’ll be cutting out the extra calories the flavoured ones contain.

Breads:  It might come as a surprise to look and see how much sugar is in your regular bread.  Next time you’re at the grocery store do a little check and see how your regular brand measures up.  There are healthier bread choices that contain more whole grains and less refined sugars.  Take a peak and choose one that offers you the most nutrition with the least sugar.

Cutting out sugar can be a great way to reduce calories and make your body feel healthier.  It can also be as easy as switching up some of your most common foods.  It doesn’t have to leave you missing out.  Taking just a few moments to find a good alternative can leave you much slimmer and healthier in the long run.
