Diet Reduces Risk of Breast Cancer

One in twenty seven women will die from breast cancer. It is a scary statistic, and one that will hopefully be on the decline with the amount of research being done to find a cure. In the meantime, women can take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer because we are far from any guaranteed protection of this horrible disease. Research suggests that adding the following foods into your diet can reduce your risk of getting breast cancer.

1. Orange and yellow fruits & vegetables. Vegetables that are bright in colors, namely orange and yellow, have significant levels of beta carotene in them. Carrots and peppers are excellent sources of this cancer fighting nutrient. Furthermore, eating these veggies raw is much more beneficial, as the beta carotene is absorbed more easily into the body, and is not destroyed by cooking.

2. Tomatoes. Tomatoes contain lycopene which is linked to both lower rates of breast cancer as well as prostate cancers. Tomatoes can be eaten raw, cooked, in tomato sauce, in juices, or even just in ketchup.

3. Fish. Cold water fish contain high amount of Omega 3 fatty acids which have been proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women. Salmon, tuna, anchovies, and crab are great options. Some nuts also contain the cancer fighting Omega 3’s, or a supplement is available from astronutrition.com.

4. Green tea. Green tea consumed either hot or cold is rich in EGCG. This compound slows cancer growth in mice and is actually twice as potent in caffeinated green tea compared with non caffeinated.

5. Soya. The effectiveness of Soya in a diet has been proven by a study conducted on Japanese women who moved to America. Many of these women ended up getting breast cancer, compared to those who stayed in Japan. It is believed that a western diet and giving up Soya had a big part in the development of this disease. Get enough Soya by eating tofu regularly, or drinking Soya milk.

Along with eating a well balanced diet, exercising daily and getting lots of rest has been linked to lower cancer rates in women. Woman should also be reminded to do monthly breast exams on themselves and an annual exam with a doctor.
