Don't Fear the Sun

As summer approaches people are being exposed to more amounts of sunlight. Sunscreens, hats, umbrella’s and shade are all a high commodity right now, but there is an increasing push to get people taking in at least some sun.

For some time now sunscreen producers have advocated complete protection from the ‘harmful’ rays of the sun. They aren’t necessarily lying about anything, but the general idea often comes across that all sun, any amount of it, is bad for you. This simply isn’t true.

Moderate exposure to the sun’s rays helps us to produce Vitamin D, which is a vitamin vital to a healthy body. Increasing research is showing that Vitamin D is an important component that helps us with everything from muscle weakness, to diabetes, to cancer or even heart disease. Consumer Health Advocate, Mike Adams, has said that, “If [vitamin D] could be patented, it would be hyped as the greatest medical breakthrough in history.” And still the best way to get enough of the vitamin is by letting your skin soak it in.

So, don’t fear the sun.

It is still wise, however, to remember that sunscreen is absolutely needed if you are intending to spend extended periods in the sun. What is recommended is that 15 to 20 minutes a day be taken in – then lather up, put on your hat, get under a tree and relax.
