Exercise With Caution In Heat This Summer
With summer in full force, it is important to be mindful when exercising in the heat. Heat cramps, dehydration, dizziness heat exhaustion and even heat stroke can be brought about by overexerting yourself in summer temperatures. Heat stroke is a form of hypothermia where the body has an abnormally high temperature. It can be fatal and even lead to death. It is important to use caution when exercising or being outdoors in the summer. Here are three ways to take care of yourself in the heat:
1.Stay hydrated. Hydration is the best way to battle the heat. Drink water during the day and if you are exercising or outdoor for long periods of time be sure to drink more than you think you need. It is easy to get hydrated and it can sneak up on you. If you are exercising try to drink about 10 ounces of fluid every 15 minutes during the exercise. Electrolytes are lost from excessive sweating so replenishing them through sports drinks or healthy foods such as bananas is important as well.
2.Take it easy. Sure you may run a 10k on a spring day but in the summer heat you need to lay off. Avoid exercising outdoors when the sun is at it&undefined;s hottest – about 11 am to 3pm every day. Go for your run in the morning or the evening when its cooler.
3.Switch up your activities. Instead of doing your normal workout, opt for something that is summer friendly such as swimming, waterskiing, snorkeling etc. Anything that involves the water is perfect for the summer, just make sure to reapply sunscreen every hour.
The beauty of summer is that you get to spend a lot of times outdoors. You can get a good workout doing so many activities, just make sure that you are mindful of the heat while you are doing them.
