Healing Power of Evening Primrose

The evening primrose plant, or Oenothera biennis, has been commonly referred to as the “sun drop” or “tree primrose”. This plant is found all over North America as well as certain parts of Europe and in the Southern Hemisphere. The native people have been using it to cure many ailments for thousands of years by pressing the oil out of the seed of the plant. Evening primrose oil is commonly used to treat stomach complaints, promote liver health, treat coughs, lower cholesterol, treat skin problems such as eczema, prevent disease, and very commonly, for women’s health.

More and more women are turning to more natural ways to cure common ailments instead of taking drugs. Evening Primrose oil has been found to be extremely beneficial in dealing with women’s health conditions. PMS, or pre menstrual syndrome has been linked with low levels of prostaglandin E1, and this oil can stimulate the production of it. This is because the oil contains fatty acid GLA, which causes the body to produce more prostaglandin E1. GLA also provides benefits such as preventing heart disease, reducing pain and inflammation and relieving hot flashes. Evening primrose oil may not only aid in relieving breast pain, menopausal symptoms, and mood swings associated with PMS, but may actually shorten labor time during birth.

Young roots of the Evening primrose plant can actually be eaten as a vegetable or the shoots can be a great addition to any salad. The most common form of this oil is in pill or capsule form, and can be conveniently taken with meals on a daily basis. Although many people have benefited from this oil, keep in mind that mild side effects may possibly appear in those that are highly sensitive to certain products. Side effects may include an upset stomach or headaches.
