Lowest Calorie Fruits and Veggies

Ok, while most fruits and veggies are relatively low cal, at least compared to a steak sandwich, there are nevertheless some that are more diet friendly than others.  Below is a selection of great fruits and veggies for dieters and some rather heavier ones you might want to avoid.

In terms of fruits you can always try sticking with high water content fruits like watermelon or going for the old diet standby grapefruit.  However, there are plenty of other fruits on the safe list.  Choosing lower calorie options for fruits and veggies can make a big difference when you’re counting every calorie in hopes of tipping the scales in your favour.

Apricots have only about 30 calories per cup, while cranberries have only 44.  These are both great fruits, rich in fiber and with lower amounts of sugar.

Strawberries, papayas and apples are also great standbys.  Although the first two are somewhat sweeter than some fruits, they are still low in calories.  Strawberries have only fifty calories a cup while papaya has about 52.

Pinaeapple, blackberries and blueberries are also good choices.  These tasty fruits are still low in calories.  Pineapple has 75 calories but is considered in fact a negative calorie treat, meaning digesting this juicy wonder will take almost as many calories as you’ll be adding.

In terms of veggies, again high water content vegetables are the best bet when it comes to losing weight.  Obviously lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes and other salad basics are a good start.  Other good options include broccoli, celery, spinach, radishes and mushrooms.

Zucchini and squash can also be low in calories, but steer clear of higher calorie veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, yams and potatoes.  Higher starch vegetables have a higher Glycemic index and can therefore add pounds and make the blood sugar spike.  Fruits like bananas and avocados should also be limited when dieting because these have higher calorie concentrations and can add the pounds on even though they are healthy in and of themselves.

Eating fruits and veggies is a great way to lose weight, but just make sure that you make the best choices you can.  Every calorie counts when you are trying desperately to shed the pounds so steer clear of diet mishaps by opting for low calorie fruits and vegetables when you can.
