Molasses Extract May Decreases Body Fat
A recent study revealed that adding a molasses extract to a high fat diet decreased the incidence of a high body fat content in mice. As compared to their fellow mice on a high fat diet, those that were given a molasses extract supplement gained less weight.
Molasses extract is known to be full of polyphenols. Polyphenols are a group of nutrients that are found in some plants. These chemical compounds are high in antioxidant properties.
In the scientific study, mice were divided into two groups. Both groups were fed a high fat diet. One of the groups was however supplemented with either two percent or four percent molasses extract.
Results showed that after twelve weeks, those mice given the 4% extract had a lower body weight in total and lower body fat. Moreover, this group also showed a decreased amount of blood glucose level of leptin. Leptin is a hormone that is created by fat cells in the body.
Beyond these findings, it was also found that molasses extract allowed for greater energy expenditure and excretion. This translates effectively to higher amounts of calories being excreted through the normal digestive process.
While more studies are needed it seems that the extract of molasses may just help to boost metabolic function. The study showed that those mice given higher doses of the extract had what is known as increased gene expression for fat cells and liver cells. These are biomarkers of metabolic processes.
Overall, this simple addition seems to have reduced body fat and weight. The main function of the molasses extract seems to have been to reduce the absorption of calories by the body.
The results are definitely promising, especially considering the increasingly high rates of obesity across the globe. While eating a high fat diet is certainly not recommended, there is at least a chance that molasses extract may be able to help reduce the body's caloric retention and perhaps even boost metabolic function.
