Falling asleep at your desk? Think it’s a good idea to run down to the store and grab a quick low-caffeine “energy” drink to wake you up and get ya goin? Well…if you’re sleep dep has you depending on these high-sugar drinks, it’s likely you won’t be alert for long.
"Sugar rushes" from such drinks don't appear to be very effective at overcoming sleepiness, writes researchers in Human Psychopharmacology. Low-caffeine/high-sugar drinks won’t make up for lost sleep they claim. Studies have confirmed that caffeine is probably more helpful than sugar in helping sleepy people pay attention, especially when followed by a short nap.
So get back to tea or coffee if you want that little jolt of enery, or even high-caffeine soft drinks (watch your diet of course). Don’t fall for those low-caffeine choices or you’ll be wandering off again in no time, and who wants to wake up to the boss tapping on your shoulder!
