The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October, the day on which the Organization was founded in 1945. The World Food Day theme for 2006 is "investing in agriculture for food security."
This year’s focus is on foreign aid for agriculture to turn around hunger in impoverished communities across the world. An estimated 854 million people around the world remain undernourished. This day hopes to create public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. Investment in agriculture and rural development - together with support for education and health - can turn this situation around.
Events take place in over 150 countries to mark World Food Day. See what's happening in your community and how you can help out. It’s easy for us to take food for granted, but for others food can be much harder to come by.
