Low sodium diets are a necessity for some and a goal for others. Sodium is not only found in a salt shaker, 75% of our salt intake comes from packaged foods alone. Cutting back on sodium can lower the risk of high blood pressure and other heart diseases. Most of us ingest way too much daily sodium without even knowing it, so here’s the low-so facts.
Processed foods are very high in sodium, so watch what you eat. Canned soup, frozen dinners, cup noodles, cereals, sauces & marinades, processed meats, nuts, chips and crackers are all high sodium culprits.
How do you lower your sodium intake? Switch from processed foods to fresh foods, or look for the low-sodium versions of the packaged food. Furthermore, look out for any form of the word "sodium" on the ingredient list (sodium chloride, sodium citrate, and sodium bicarbonate).
We all need sodium to regulate fluid in the body, but with excessive amounts comes health risks. Check labels! Watch your sodium levels today and you’ll see a healthier tomorrow.
