Obesity Is On The Rise

Obesity is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in North America. In the UK, about 46% of men in England and 32% of women are overweight and these numbers are on the rise. The World Health Organization has even gone so far as to label obesity as an “epidemic”. Overweight and obesity are both labels for weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. People who are overweight or obese are at a much higher risk for health conditions such as heart problems, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, and numerous types of cancers. Severe obesity is defined by a person being 20% heavier than his or her ideal weight. Those that are classified as severely obese have a much shorter life expectancy and are six times more likely to develop heart disease.

Obesity occurs when the body consumes more calories than it burns leading to weight gain. Though a common myth is that obesity is caused by overeating and under exercising other factors play a role in a person’s weight. Environment, social behavior, health, and genetic factors can all affect weight. An individual that has a low metabolism and health problems is predisposed to being overweight or obese due to no fault of their own. Cardiovascular problems are quite common in people who are obese. Because the heart has to work harder, it can lead to congestive heart failure. Those with high amounts of cholesterol in their blood can experience hardening of the arteries which also contributes to heart disease. Obesity can also cause respiratory problems because the lungs decrease in size. The chest cavity also becomes more difficult for the body to lift and overweight people may have difficulty doing simple chores such as yard work or even just climbing up the stairs.

Though some factors which contribute to obesity are not controllable, there are many people who are obese from their unhealthy living habits. Eating healthy meals void of trans fats, exercising regularly, and taking general care of your health will all contribute to a more healthy lifestyle and decrease your chance of developing health problems.
