Piranha Battle the Bulge

A shoal of piranha fish on show at a British aquatic centre have had to be put on a diet after putting on weight in captivity, officials reported on May 19th. A nutrient-rich diet will help these predators slim down as staff monitor their size over the next month.

Regular feeding frenzies of trout, prawns and mussels have caused the piranha to become a bit podgy in the past month. They are now only being fed half-portions in a bid to shift the excess, Lynsey Thompson, from Birmingham's Sea Life Centre said.

She explains that Piranha, which are normally found in the River Amazon in South America, are capable of stripping a whole dead pig to the bone within minutes and can literally eat themselves to death. "In the wild, species of piranha can go for days without any food,” she adds.

It seems even the underwater world are being affected by obesity! Piling on the pounds in captivity with fresh meat thrown at them all day…the rough life of the piranha. Let’s hope they take to the diet – we don’t want visiting children to have to watch them get hungry and turn on each other.
