If you are in tune with majority of the population you’d probably like to have a job that would allow you to retire early, ideally. Who wouldn’t want to retire at age 50 if they could? Well new information contradicts that mentality saying we should try to work as long as we are able.
A team of economists finds that Americans aged 50 to 75 who retire suffer a 23 to 29 per cent increase in difficulties associated with mobility and daily activities, an 8 per cent increase in illness and an 11 per cent decline in mental health, compared with their counterparts who don't stop working. Their study is published as National Bureau of Economic Research working paper No. 12123.
So should pension plans and other services be discouraging work beyond some point? Retirement should be a personal choice – if you can do it early then by all means…if you want to work til you’re 80 go for it. Who says golfing or traveling or keeping active won’t keep you physically and mentally stimulated after you retire?!
