Although most people know that they should use sunblock, the many dangers of the sun still seem to be overlooked. Skin cancer is now one of the most prominent cancers because people are not protecting themselves properly. It is estimated that over 10,000 people die each year from skin cancer caused by the sun.
The sun emits ultraviolet light which burn and damage the skin, drying it out. It not only causes sun burns and premature aging of the skin but most importantly can cause the formation of free radicals. Free radicals lack electrons and therefore attempt to steal electrons from other molecules, damaging them while doing so. This can damage the cells and cause mutations such as cancer. Unfortunately sun damage is almost impossible to erase or correct. The amount of time you spend in the sun throughout your life directly affects the health of your skin and is the main factor in skin aging. Wrinkles, sun spots (brown spots), crow’s feet and sagging skin are all caused by sun exposure.
So how do you protect yourself from the sun? Wearing sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 on a daily basis is a good start. You should two different kinds of sunblock-one for your face and one for your body. The sunblock for your face should not contain any irritating ingredients or oils which can cause acne or other skin conditions. When applying pay careful attention to highly sensitive areas such as the neck, ears, and the hands. Also remember to reapply every hour or so, and use waterproof sunblock if you are active outside or in the water. Many clothing manufacturers are also starting to make clothing that will also protect from the sun. Most importantly, avoid tanning beds! Tanning beds are extremely dangerous because they can expose the user to up to five times the radiation as the sun.
Although avoiding the sun altogether is the best protection, you do not want to limit yourself to enjoying the outdoors. Wearing hats and other sun protective clothing and wearing daily sunscreen will ensure your skin stays healthy, protected, and young looking.
