This year, the annual World Health Day celebration will honor health workers – the most valuable resources we have for health. The Pan American Health Organization and countries throughout the Americas will join the World Health Organization in observing World Health Day with events throughout the week of April 3-7, ending with a special session today, Friday, April 7.
The day will energize relevant constituencies to celebrate health workers around the world. The follow-up activities will focus on implementing and evaluating policies and strategies for workforce development.
Priorities for action in 2006:
- Educating and training health workers
- Supporting and helping health workers
- Enhancing the effectiveness of the health workforce
- Tackling imbalances and inequities
This day marks another important celebration in global health awareness, but a huge shortage of health care workers in the world has left the health system in turmoil. Solutions to this crisis must be worked out at local, national and international levels - find out what your community has planned today and see how you can get involved.
