Understanding Eating Disorders

The number of people affected by eating disorders in our society today is growing drastically. Eating disorders affect not only the person suffering from the disease but their friends and family members as well. There are several kinds of eating disorders but anorexia and bulimia are by far the most common.

Anorexia nervosa is considered a psychological disorder that is characterized by not eating. It is an eating disorder where those suffering from it refuse to maintain a normal or healthy weight for their height, age, and body type. Along with consuming very little food throughout the day, anorexics commonly participate in excessive exercise to the point of exhaustion. Symptoms of anorexia nervosa include extreme weight loss, low blood pressure, dental cavities, depression, blotchy skin, and extreme fatigue. If it goes too far, anorexia can even cause organ dysfunction and death. About 95% of those affected by anorexia are female and the disease usually starts during adolescence. The exact cause of this disease is unknown but causes can range from social attitudes, media, genetics, family factors, and trauma.

Bulimia is considered an eating and psychiatric compulsive disorder. It is characterized by normal or binge eating followed by severe dieting and restrictions in calories. Binge eating must occur regularly in order for the person to be characterized as bulimic. Bulimics commonly use laxatives, diuretics, self induced vomiting and fasting to keep their weight under control. As with anorexia the cause is not completely known but can be attributed to many of the same factors (society, family, etc). People with this disease will try to hide the binge eating and purging from their families and friends and will go to extreme lengths to do this. Symptoms of the disorder include fatigue, dizziness, loss of menstrual cycles, and noticeable fluctuations in weight.
