Vitamin D, or the sunshine vitamin, is not only essential to our bone and tooth healthy but studies are now showing that it can prevent breast and colorectal cancers.

Scientists found is that 2,000 international units a day of vitamin D3 would produce a serum level of vitamin D that would correspond to getting rid of two-thirds of colorectal cancer. They also found that the same amount would eliminate around half of all cases of breast cancer.

In the study looking at the effect of Vitamin D on breast cancer involved 1,760 people. They were divided into equal groups ranging from those who had the lowest levels of Vitamin D to the highest. The data showed conclusively that the higher the amount of vitamin D in the blood, the lower the rate of breast cancer. The study on the colorectal cancer and Vitamin D correlation was very similar. It involved 1,448 people organized in similar way. The results concluded that the rate of colorectal cancer dropped by two thirds when people had 2,000 IU of Vitamin D each day.
