What Are Antioxidants?

We all hear about how different foods or drinks are high in antioxidants, and are therefore good for us. We are meant to think, ‘Well good, I like antioxidants,’ and then dive in and enjoy the healthiness that is sure to come by consuming them. We take them, get happy about feeling like we have done something good for ourselves, and then go on with our day.

But what exactly are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are molecules in our body that can safely bond with free radicals, also known simply as radicals. Radicals are atoms, or groups of atoms, produced when your body uses oxygen for energy, or when you are exposed to damaging things like pollution, or cigarette smoke. When radicals bond with different cellular components, such as DNA, they quickly start a chain reaction, almost like a domino effect, where they repeat the process very quickly and easily. The cells that have bonded with free radicals often function poorly, or die, causing unnecessary damage to your body.

Antioxidants bond to the affected cells stopping the chain reaction, which protects your body from further damage.

Antioxidants are found in a wide selection of different things, from wine to carrots, or fish-oils to cantaloupe. There are also many different herbal options to ensure an optimum amount of intake. So the next time you hear about something being rich in antioxidants, remember that by eating the item you will be giving yourself protection against the damage that occurs with daily life.
