What Would You Give Up To Be Thin?

Your sight? Your marriage? Well, according to a new intense study people would be willing to sacrifice life and limb, literally, to avoid being obese.

In an on-line survey aimed at measuring bias against obesity, researchers at Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity found that nearly half of all respondents would give up a year of their life rather than being fat; and 15 percent said they would trim a decade of life for a perpetually lean gut. A small percentage of the roughly 4,300 people surveyed surprisingly said they would rather lose a limb (5 percent), or go blind (4 percent) than put on some extra pounds.

Just when you thought people wouldn’t go any further…30 percent of respondents said they would rather be divorced than obese; 25 percent said they would prefer not being able to have children; 15 percent said they would rather be severely depressed or an alcoholic.

Oh, the sacrifices people will make in their lives to combat the bulge. Being overweight is obviously seen as worse than a lot of other problems that people face in life. This research pushes the boundaries and explains why so many people will try extreme dieting and push themselves in pretty extreme ways to shed pounds. You would think most people would rather stay away from fries, butter, and chocolate than lose a body part!
