Mediators such as histamine, bradykinin and PGE2 all potentiate pain through sensitization of afferent nerve endings (the nerves that transmit impulses to the CNS and brain). Basically, these inflammatory mediators cause the body's pain receptors to become more sensitive. Quercetin, however, prevents the formation of those inflammatory mediators, thereby blocking the pain and other symptoms associated with inflammation.

Researchers in the Netherlands believe that it is possible that quercetin and other flavonoids reduce risk of heart disease by lowering the formation of plaque-building substances, specifically oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL).

Many of the complications associated with diabetes, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and neuropathy, are caused by the sorbitol pathway, a process through which high levels of glucose are converted to sorbitol and fructose via the enzyme aldose reductase. In experimental animals, inhibitors of aldose reductase reduced the kidney and neurological symptoms that increase with diabetes. Quercetin is an established aldose reductase inhibitor, giving it potential for helping with diabetic complications.

Rating Quercetin is a flavonoid in some fruits, vegetables, and teas. It is considered healthy, however how effective it is has yet to be conclusively shown. It does appear that it might help treat cancer and heart disease, but the current data is limited.
Quercetin might be part of the reason behind a study finding tea drinkers in the Netherlands to have a lower risk of heart disease. It has also been studied as an antioxidant that might help treat cancer and reduce resistance to drugs. Another study suggests it might block male hormones that cause prostate cancer.
There are several possible benefits of quercetin, although there is little or no clinical date to prove or disprove most. These possible benefits include it being a potent antioxidant, helping reduce bad cholesterol, lowering the risk of heart disease, improving lung function, reducing risk of respiratory problems, treating allergies, and preventing heart disease and cancer.
Since the studies are minimal at this point, it might be best to wait before using it, as there what dosage is safe and effective has not yet been studied. The long term effects of using quercetin is also unknown.
Since the supplement industry is not regulated, quercetin supplements can vary in concentration and quality and thus effectiveness. (Posted on 2/28/11)
