Rating PGX Daily is being marketed as a product that “will change your life, even if you don’t.” This is a rather outrageous claim, but that does not mean it is necessarily an entirely bad product.
The main ingredients in PGX Daily are glucomannan and kopjac making it a fiber supplement.
Glucomannan is used in fat burners for its clinically proven ability to lower LDL cholesterol, blood lipid levels, and blood sugar levels. It has also been found to help with weight loss, especially when taken with water about an hour before eating. The weight loss effects mean losing about 6 pounds in two months and not the exaggerated claims made by many retailers.
PGX Daily advertising bases its claims on studies of the actual product, but they seem to be in house unpublished studies. Thus they are not peer reviewed studies and could be biased.
This is especially true, since glucomannan can also have some downsides to using it. For one, it can bind with some nutrients and keep them from being absorbed. Thus it is important to also take a good quality multivitamin when taking glucomannan based products. It can also get stuck in the esophagus and cause a blockage, but this can be avoided by using the PGX Daily granules formulation instead of the capsules.
PGX Daily also includes MCT oil, which might help with weight loss, but only in very large doses. The studies show that the daily dosage needs to by more than 70 times as much as the 600mg in PGX daily in order to be effective. However, it is suspect as to whether there is even that much in it because one capsule cannot contain the 600mg of MCT oil along with the other 750mg of ingredients it claims to provide in one capsule. It is possible that it is just mislabeled and refers to a two capsule serving, but it could be misrepresentation since the supplement industry is not regulated.
PGX Daily does still contain glucomannan as a fiber supplement that can be beneficial and more convenient for some than eating more fiber rich foods. It can help you eat less and thus lose weight through consuming less calories. It can also control cravings by regulating glucose levels. However, just remember that it is not a miracle weight loss product and it does not seem to be any more effective than just glucomannan. (Posted on 2/17/11)
