DNA is very useful for identification. Today’s DNA test technology allows almost 100% accuracy in identifying individuals.
Before DNA tests, identifying individuals and their relationship to others was diffcult and not an exact science. The old techniques included blood typing, serological testing, and HLA testing. These tests do have useful applications, such as helping match blood and tissue donors with recipients to reduce the possibility of rejection in transplant patients. However, they are not entirely accurate for identification and determining relationships purposes.
The usefulness of DNA testing to identify individuals and determine biological relationships were found soon after DNA testing was introduced in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Today with DNA testing we can identify individuals and who they are related to with accuracy and conclusiveness.
