Drug testing is increasingly common these days. This includes parents wanting to makes sure their kids stay drug free, employers seeking to keep their work place drug free, and adults testing themselves before pre-employment drug screening.

LeadConfirm is almost 100% accurate. It is a FDA approved collection kit that is provides the same reliability of results as lead blood tests. The test kits are tested by a CLIA Accredited Laboratory that utilizes high-tech Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Mass Spectrometry X2 (LC/MS/MS) technology to find how much lead is present in the sample.

Lead Report: When you use LeadConfirm Professional you can discover how much lead you and your family have been exposed to as well as whether the amount is something to worry about. Armed with the results you can have peace of mind or be able to do what you need to do to limit lead exposure.

You then put the applicator in the testing device and mail it to the laboratory using the included pre-paid mailer. The results of your lead levels are available within just a few days.

If your lead test results are positive, you should follow up with a doctor for additional analysis and lead poisoning treatment.

Oral Fluid Diagnostics

The saliva is often called the “mirror of the body.” This is because it is an important substance that carries molecules that include bio markers of disease, drug use evidence, and additional indicators about what is going on inside the human body. Saliva has long been approved by the US FDA as a way of testing for HIV-1 and HIV-2 infection. Since many compounds found in blood are also found in salvia, hormones and other frequently measured compounds can be analyzed from saliva samples instead of blood. Thus it is accepted as a testing medium that is easier and cheaper to collect. It is also safer because it does not expose health care workers to blood-borne diseases.

Finding Lead in Saliva

Before now the only commonly acceptable method for testing lead in humans was testing blood samples. A recent study found saliva to be an effective way of testing the levels of lead in the body. The study used a patented methodology and process known as LeadFinder™ at Confirm BioScience’s partner lab Western Slope Laboratory in Troy, Michigan in order to check the lead of 100 children in North Carolina. The blood of the children was checked for lead at the same time by the Department of Health in North Carolina.

When the two lead test study results were studied, it showed saliva to be an effective way of determining the amount of lead in the body. This is especially useful if the test is being done as a screening test involving a physician being recommended to be consulted when the results exceed a specific level. The study results when comparing the lead levels in the saliva tests to the blood tests were 100% related.

Does a positive screen mean there is too much lead in the person tested?

LeadConfirm is a type of screening test and the results will show if the person has been recently exposed to lead. If the results are positive, it is recommended you seek your physician if further action is needed and what appropriate actions should be done. This might involve a follow-up blood test.

What is Lead?

Lead is a type of metal found naturally in the earth. In the human body, though, it is a poison. Before the negative effects of lead were fully known it was commonly used in paint, gasoline, plumbing, and many more commonly used items. Although, not used as much anymore, it is still something most people come in contact with on a daily basis. Some of the ways lead enters our bodies include defective glazes (pottery), drinking water, contaminated soil, airborne particulate, leaded gasoline, and paint.

It is never safe to be overexposed to lead. Adults can end up with problems associated with lead poisoning, however, child under age 6 can be most effected since it can permanently damage their growth and development. It is important that pregnant women do their best to avoid lead exposure, as it can pass through her to the unborn baby. Additionally, lead can be passed to babies through the mother’s breast milk.

What is lead poisoning?

Lead poisoning happens when your body ends up absorbing too much lead. The lead can end up in your body through breathing or ingesting substances with lead in them. This can include food, dust, paint, or water. When there is too much lead in children it can cause irreversible issues in their growth and development. These issues include behavior problems, hearing problems, learning problems, and slowed growth.

Lead poisoning in adults can result in serious health issues such as high blood pressure. It can also damage the brain, nervous system, stomach, and kidneys.

Lead is not naturally in the body, but it is extremely common for people to have at least a small amount of it in their body. Lead can damage most organ systems, although the most harm is caused to the brain, nervous system, kidneys, and blood.

The Centers for Disease Control deems that the greatest environmental heath risk to children because it can cause irreversible harm to their immune systems while they are still in the developmental stages.

Who is most prone to lead poisoning?

Lead poisoning is possible at any age. However, children are most prone to lead poisoning. Those at highest risk of lead poisoning include those who:
• Reside in structures built prior to 1978, especially structures made prior to 1950, as lead-based paint was commonly used before 1950 and occasionally up until being banned in 1978
• Live in the inner cities in the United States instead of suburbs
• Are adopted or recently immigrated from countries in which lead poisoning is common including China
• Play with toys containing highly concentrated lead paint

Kids between the ages of one and five are the most at risk of lead poisoning for the following reasons:
• They tend to place their hands and other things in their mouths.
• They occasionally swallow non-food objects.
• Their absorption of lead in the gastrointestinal tract is high.
• Their brains are quickly developing.

Other ways lead exposure and lead poisoning might occur include the following:
• Drinking water that flows through lead-soldered pipes
• Adults who work with lead as part of their job or hobby. This includes metal smelters, pottery makers, and stained glass artists.
• Eating food from cans that contain lead solder, which is in some products produced outside the United States
• Using ceramic containers for cooking or storing food or drinks. This can cause problems due to some ceramic glazes containing lead and the ceramic container might not have been properly fired and cured.
• Taking traditional or folk remedies that contain lead such as some herbs and vitamins made or grown in India
• Residing in areas affected by industrial emissions

Many are exposed to at least some lead during their lifetime. Environmental regulations have decreased the amount of lead exposure in the United States in the past few decades. However, it remains a major health risk, especially for young children. It is believes that over 310,000 children in the United States are affected by lead poisoning.

How is lead poisoning treated?

The main way of treating lead poisoning is to avoid lead exposure as much as you can. Eating a balanced diet that allows your body to get the nutrients it needs, especially iron, can help keep your body from absorbing lead. This form of treatment approach is usually enough to reduce lead levels. However, if avoiding exposure and eating a balanced diet with iron is not effective or your body has extremely high levels of lead, chelation therapy is another option for treating lead poisoning. When undergoing chelation therapy, medicines are used that attach to lead. This helps the kidneys remove the lead from the body more efficiently.

It is important that you do your best to keep children from being exposed to lead. This includes keeping children out of buildings and away from toys that use lead-based paint until the lead has been removed or sealed away and professionals certify the environment is free of lead residues.
