Rating Gymnema sylvestre is a herb that naturally grows in the tropical forests of India. It has been for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to treat diabetes.
Animal as well as human studies have found Gymnema effective in helping with diabetes. This includes it having a good effect on lipid metabolism. Thus it might be effective at treating diabetes as well as obesity.
It is not yet clear how Gymnema provides the benefits, but it is believed it inhibits glucose uptake in the small intestine and improves insulin release.
Gymnema sylvestre also appears to inhibit tasting sweetness and bitterness. However, this is only based on animal studies.
Gymnema is at least proven to help regulate blood sugar as well as suppress related carbohydrate cravings. (Posted on 2/16/11)
