Milk thistle is commonly used to treat liver diseases and improve liver health. Milk thistle contains silymarin, which is an antioxidant that scavenges free radicals. It also reduces lipid peroxidation, which protects and stabilizes cell membranes. Additionally, it possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and immunomodulating capabilities.

There are numerous scientific studies on the liver protecting capabilities of silymarin. Rodent studies show that silymarin lowers or prevents liver toxicity caused by a variety of medicines. It also protects the liver from ischemic liver injury and inflammatory liver disease. The effectiveness of it relates to it having preventative and curative abilities.

Silymarin is often used in Europe and Asia to treat Amanita mushroom poisoning, cirrhosis, hepatitis, and other liver diseases. Studies on silymarin have shown that it does not have much effect on the mortality rate of these liver diseases, although it seems to help some with alcohol-related cirrhosis. Studies have found it milk thistle might still be effective for some liver disease, such as hepatitis C.

Experimental research suggests that silymarin might be able to help prevent or slow the growth of some cancers according to preliminary data. The main research on cancers has been on prostate cancer in cell culture and live animal studies. The studies suggest it might slow or stop cancer growth by changing cell cycle progression and stopping mitogenic and cell survival signaling. Rodent studies have found it might help prevent or stop the growth of bladder, colon, skin, breast, glioma, and lung, and tongue cancer.

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of silymarin also contributes to additionally benefits of milk thistle. These effects have been shown to reduce atherosclerosis and cholesterol levels in animals ingesting high cholesterol diets. It shows it is cardioprotective. The anti-inflammatory effect show it might help with treating inflammatory disorders such as arthritis.

Silymarin is mostly non-toxic and has minimal possible side effects. When used by itself there are no major side effects. There are some negative drug interactions known. Some side effects have been reported including gastrointestinal disturbances and allergic skin rashes. It can be toxic to the liver in high concentrations, but not usually if taken in normal supplement doses.

Most studies use a dosage of 420mg of milk thistle. It is recommended to use a dosage of 200 to 400mg of milk thistle daily to maintain liver health. High doses of 500 to 1000mg can help deal with high liver stress. (Posted on 2/26/11)

My boyfriend drinks quite a bit (works in a bar) so I have been giving him these to take daily especially after a late night. He say they are easing his headaches and make him a little more energized. I am hoping the extract helps balance his liver so he's still around at 40. I have tried them and after a few days they give me a 'clean' feeling that's hard to describe but it feels good! (Posted on 1/19/09)

30 years old, lifelong drinker. Recently was getting red-faced after only 2 drinks and was told it was my liver. Took milk thistle on a recommendation and surprisingly, found out it makes a huge difference. The only way to describe it is a sense that your body feels "flushed" and clean. Made a big difference in my sluggishness and I don't have problems drinking alcohol anymore. (Posted on 1/19/09)
