- Always moisturize your hands after they come into contact with water. Moisturizers with urea, lactic acid, or glycerin oil are particularly effective for keeping hand skin hydrated.
- Barrier creams and silicone creams keep moisture in the skin. Use these creams to shield your skin, especially when you are doing dirty or greasy jobs, such as washing the dishes. Gloves are also a big help.
- Rub lotion into your hands before bed every night.
- Apply nail hardener to your fingernails if they split and chip easily.
- Believe it or not, nail polish is good for your nails. It protects nails from stains, damage, harmful chemicals, and more. Use a base coat to prevent discoloration. If your nails are discolored from polish, soak them in water with a drop of lemon oil twice a week.
- If you have dried-out fingernails, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes every day, dry them completely, and then apply moisturizer.
- Use a very fine nail file to carefully sculpt and shape your nails.
- Only push back cuticles when nails are warm and wet. Always push them into a “half-moon” shape.

As you age, your hands may become susceptible to skin diseases and your nails become thicker. Be sure to pay attention to any symptoms that may indicate underlying problems. For example, thick nails might indicate a fungal infection, and nails that separate from the finger could indicate an iron or thyroid deficiency.
