Rating Anabol-5 is advertised as an “anabolic amplifier” that is the first non-hormonal, non-steroial capable of effectively boosting “the body’s own protein building cycle.” Anabol-5 has fast-acting and extended-release phases that are meant to keep it working in the body all day to promote “maximum anabolism and muscle growth.”
Anabol-5 claims to have an anabolic/androgenic ratio of 33 to 1. However, there is nothing that explains where this ratio comes from other than a 30-year-old Russian study on rats that was only published in Russian. The study results have not been reproduced in any peer-reviewed Western research or in-house studies.
Anabol-5 mostly contains phytosteroids, which are plant derived steroidal compounds. The primary one is 6-keto diosgenin. This is used to produce active human steroids in pharmaceutical produces. However, there is no evidence this conversion occurs outside of the laboratory or in the human body. It does not directly affect hormonal or anabolic activity in humans or animals.
The only existing evidence that 6-keto diosgenin is an effective anabolic is the Russian study. This study is not only old and only in Russian, but the Russian research industry is often unreliable. Also, the study used rats and not humans. Lastly, it does not show what doses were used or if the compounds were given orally. Without any other independent clinical data, it is hard to say that 6-keto diosgenin is actually effective.
Anabol-5 also contains acetate/propinate/cypionate/decanoate groups of ingredients. These are believed to improve lipid solubility and help lymphatic system uptake. However, the addition of these means you get less than the 100mg of active 6-keto diosgenin listed per dose.
The dicyclopenatonone is another ingredient in Anabol-5 that has its claim’s of effectiveness traced to just one Russian animal study. This study does at least mention dosage, but the dosage when converted to human terms would need to be much larger than what is in Anabol-5.
The other saponin ingredients of hecogenin acetate and 25R Spirostan-5A-Diol-6-One-Undecanoate also lack any clinical evidence to show they have any anabolic activity.
The Rhaponticum carthamoides in Anabol-5 is marketed for having anabolic activity in mammals, but one study found even a 200mg dose did not help with mass or strength in exercising humans.
Bottom line is that Anabol-5 lacks any real evidence to back up its claims and it does not appear to actually provide any mass or strength gain results. (Posted on 2/18/11)
