DMAE supplements contain dimethylaminoethanol. Dimethylaminoethanol has been used for a while. Within the past few decades there have been several studies done on how it affects the human body. The history of its usage includes being used in Europe for a while, but become more popular to use in the United States.
The early DMAE supplement research focused on how it affected memory. More specifically many of the studies looked at how it affected memory in patients with Alzheimer’s or other severe types of dementia. The results did not show that DMAE supplements directly improved memory, but they did show that it benefited the brain in other ways.
DMAE supplements were shown to affect mood, focus, and alertness/clarity of thought. More recently research studies have focused on how use of DMAE supplements improve the above three things. In the studies improved mood and alertness showed positive results in self-assessed questionnaires and EEG testing. The questionnaires showed that the patients felt an improvement in mood when taking DMAE supplements. The EEG tests showed that the brain waves activity increased after several weeks of taking DMAE supplements. This showed that the patients had increased alertness and brain activity compared to before they took the supplements.
The results of the studies show that DMAE is a positive brain supplement. While it does not help with memory, it does improve alertness and focus. However, as with most things there might be potential side effects.
Research studies have shown that there are some negative side effects associated with using DMAE. In most cases the side effects are caused by taking more than recommended. When taken as directed, DMAE supplements usually do not cause side effects, except in the few that are have a lower level of sensitivity to DMAE.
The main potential side effects of taking DMAE are headaches, muscle tension, anxiety/overstimulation, and insomnia. Usually these are caused by overdosing. Often the symptoms went away when the patients switched to a lower dosage of DMAE. For those that were affected by insomnia, some found relief by taking the DMAE supplements earlier in the day. This is due to the DMAE helping increase the brain’s alertness, thus it interferes with the brain’s sleep function if taken too close to bedtime.
The majority of people who take DMAE do not suffer from negative side effects. Thus when used properly it is safe and effective. However, it is always best to check with your doctor before taking any supplement to ensure it does not interact with any other medicines or health issues you have.
DMAE supplements can be beneficial in improving brain function usually without negative side effects. It can improve your brain function and protect against the effects of aging on the brain when used along with other natural substances, such as Ginkgo, Ginseng, and Passion Flower.
