Melatonin is the all-natural nightcap. It's secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, as our eyes register the fall of darkness.

At night melatonin is produced to help our bodies regulate our sleep-wake cycles. The amount of it produced by our body seems to lessen as we get older. Scientists believe this may be why young people have less problem sleeping than older people.

As I got older I found it more and more difficult to fall and stay asleep throughout the night.I used to wake up tired, the day ahead seemed to be filled with unsurmountable difficulties. Prescribed sleeping pills just made things worst by knocking me out at night and preventing me next day from driving, keeping me bleary eyed all day long.
Now after taking Melatonin 3 mg I fall asleep naturally, do not wake up several times in the night and what is really enjoyable to me, is to wake up feeling rested ,ready, bright and bushy tailed, curious about the new day , as I was when I was a child.
My doctor knows about it and does not interfere, obviously he does not think I am doing anything harmful. Greatly recommended, specially for older people. (Posted on 1/27/11)

The melatonin works well for our dog 'Difa' who is very frightened of pops and bangs. Once heard, she just goes frantic for some hours, Melatonin calms after about 40 minutes. Great Stuff. If ever I have sleep problems I will try it myself. (Posted on 3/5/10)

Worked really well to help me sleep when I was going through a period of insomnia as a result of anxiety. I found a whole capsule was too much though and made me very sleepy the next day so now I only take 1/5 of a capsule sprinkled in a glass of water. Works just as well and I wake up feeling great. Im a teacher in my first year. With so much going on in my mind from the day and thinking constantly about the next day, I just couldnt switch off and get the good night sleep that I really needed. Someone recommened melatonin and its been brilliant. Truely excellent. And great value too! So much more effective than other products I've used to try and get to sleep.

I've been taking melatonin on and off for years as a sleep aid. In my experience, taking 1-2 3mg tabs is enough to put me into a really restful sleep and really quickly too. Taking 3 capsules made me really drowsy and heavy the next morning, highly not recommended!

I wouldn't take these everyday, but I would take them for those restless nights or when jet lagged.

My understanding is that our body's ability to produce melatonin from our pineal gland declines as we age. Replacing our loss of melatonin with melatonin supplements is recommended after these levels start declining.
