AOR - MCP - Interferes With the Spread of Cancer - 450 G

Cancer- A disease that spreads
Cancer is a difficult disease to treat because cancer cells do not follow the rules of regular cells. One important abnormality of cancer cells is that they do not have to stay attached to their surrounding environment in order to survive. This characteristic enables cancer cells to travel to other areas of the body and colonize new tissues. It is this ability to metastasize that makes cancer a particularly difficult and deadly disease.

A weapon against malignancy
In order to invade other tissues, cancer cells must be able to attach to tissue cells. One way in which they do this is by covering themselves with proteins called galectins that bind to galactose-rich molecules on the surface of healthy cells. Pectins from citrus fruits contain high amounts of galactose, which cause the galectins on cancer cells to bind to them instead of to healthy tissues, thereby preventing metastasis and colonization.

Effective pectins
Most pectins found in fruit are in long, complex chains that do not effectively bind to galectins. AOR's MCP provides pectins that have been split into shorter fragments, thereby providing more effective protection against metastasizing cancer cells.

Modified Citrus Pectin
Cancer is one of the worst nightmares of our time. However, if a cancerous growth remains localized, it can be a manageable health challenge rather than an all-consuming assault on the body's tissues and resources. The real danger occurs if the cancer begins to spread. The main way that this can happen is when cancer cells break off from the main tumor, get taken up into the bloodstream, travel to distant organs and begin a fresh cycle of parasitical growth.

This cancerous colonization process is known as metastasis, which is what kills most people who suffer from cancer. In fact, only tumors that are able to invade other tissues are properly called cancers, and it's the metastatic property of such tumors that are labeled "malignant."

Ripe for Takeover
One of the key factors that determines whether a given cancer cell will be able to penetrate a healthy tissue is its ability to latch onto that tissue's cells. To gain this crucial first foothold, cancer cells often take advantage of a necessary feature of healthy cells. Tissues stay together because their cells are covered with complex proteins called lectins. A given lectin is specialized to interact with a specific, matching carbohydrate-rich molecule on neighboring cells called its "glycoconjugate." The structures of lectins and their glycoconjugates fit together like lock and key: they allow cells with matching recognition molecules to bind to one another without sticking improperly to other cell types.

Cancer's Skeleton Keys
It has been shown that many cancer cells exploit the lectin recognition system by covering themselves with "keys" that match the "locks" in distant, healthy tissues. One lectin "lock" which many cancer cells learn to "pick" is called galectin-3. Galectin-3 recognizes glycoconjugates, which contain the sugar galactose. By sprouting dense forests of galectin-3 - or its glycoconjugate - on their surfaces, these cancer cells increase their ability to spread, to take root, and to grow deadly new tumors. Manipulative abuse of galectin-3 has been implicated in the metastasis of cancers of the pancreas, colon, lung, ovaries, breast, and prostate.

MCP: "Chaff" Against Metastasis
Mounting evidence suggests that there is a natural way to prevent cancer cells from taking advantage of galectin-3: pH-modified citrus pectin, or MCP. Pectin from citrus fruits contains a significant number of residues of the sugar galactose. Potentially, these residues could interact with galectin-3 and prevent it from interacting with its glycoconjugates, thereby protecting healthy tissues from being targeted by metastasizing cancer cells.

Unfortunately, most of the pectin in citrus fruits is present in the form of long, complex chains whose galactose residues are hidden deep within their intricate molecular branching and cannot interact with galectin-3. To solve this problem, the carbohydrate chains can be split into shorter fragments under pH-controlled conditions, exposing more galactose residues. This process maximizes the opportunities for the fiber's galactose residues to interact with galectin-3. Working with the fibers of lemons, grapefruits, or tangerines in this way creates pH-modified citrus pectin (MCP).

Studies of MCP
Numerous studies in both isolated cells and living organisms have shown that MCP can block the metastatic potential of many different kinds of cancer. Most excitingly of all, human phase I and Phase II studies of MCP have been completed in patients with colorectal and pancreatic cancers. The preliminary results were very suggestive of a true anti-metastatic power of MCP in humans.
