Helps with mood and sleep disorders
L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan and a precursor of the brain signaling molecule serotonin. Studies with 5-HTP have found that it may be able to help with a variety of disorders including mood disorders and migraine headaches, as well as generally supporting healthy sleep patterns. It also appears to help regulate the tone of the muscles of the back and neck to alter blood flow and pain fibers.

An important brain messenger
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter with important functions in health. Low levels of serotonin lead to depression, and have also been linked to anxiety, insomnia, aggressiveness, migraines and some obsessive compulsive and eating disorders, as well as possibly fibromyalgia. Serotonin as a supplement is unable to pass through the blood brain barrier. However, its precursor 5-HTP is well absorbed and can penetrate the blood brain barrier where it is converted into serotonin.

An all-natural precursor
5-HTP is an all-natural supplement derived from the seed extract of the plant Griffonia simplifolia. AOR’s Tryfonia Max delivers a clinically supported dose of this important metabolite.

5-Hydroxytryptophan - The Immediate Serotonin Precursor
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is derived from the seed of Griffonia simplicifolia, a small shrub tree that grows off the Ivory Coast and Ghana. It is well-established that one of the basic physiological causes of depression is low serotonin levels. Low serotonin levels may also be associated with many other conditions and mood disorders. While supplemental serotonin cannot enter the brain, naturally derived 5HTP, a serotonin precursor, is well absorbed orally (70%) and penetrates the blood brain barrier. Food does not interfere with its absorption.

Pharmacology / Clinical Applications

Depression

Over 19 studies, mainly conducted in Europe, have evaluated the clinical effects of 5HTP. A Swiss study found that a 300mg daily dose was slightly superior to fluvoxamine, a standard selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with lower incidence of side-effects. 5-HTP has also been compared to tricyclic antidepressants (clomipramine and imipramine) and has been found to be as effective as these prescriptive antidepressants.

Another advantage of 5-HTP is the quicker onset of action compared with conventional treatments. In one study, 50% of the patients began to improve after 3 days, and 80% within 2 weeks, whereas conventional antidepressants take much longer to achieve therapeutic response.

Sleep
A Norwegian study found 5-HTP improved sleep as effectively as did L-Tryptophan. Melatonin is a down- stream metabolite of 5-HTP, which explains this effect.

Anti-migraine
A Spanish study compared 5-HTP with the drug methysergide and found comparable improvement (over 70% of both groups) with considerably fewer side-effects in the 5-HTP group. The researchers concluded 5-HTP to be the preferred preventive measure against migraine attacks. An Italian study confirmed these results.

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia patients have been found to have low serotonin levels and have shown symptomatic improvement with the use of tricyclic and SSRI antidepressants. Several clinical trials have confirmed significant improvement in symptoms, including pain, morning stiffness, anxiety, and fatigue. An Italian study showed significant improvement following a total dose of 300mg for 30 days. A longer 12-month study using a daily dose of 400mg of 5-HTP found the supplement to be as effective as amitriptyline and/or phenelzine (MAOI). 5-HTP was also found to be safe and well-tolerated.

Anti-obesity
Serotonin is one of the most important neurotransmitters involved in satiety. In higher levels, the administration of 5-HTP leads to decreased food intake. In one study, 20 obese patients were randomly assigned to receive either 900mg of 5-HTP in three divided doses thirty minutes before food or placebo. There was a significant weight loss in patients with reduced carbohydrate intake.

Suggested Use: Take one capsule three times daily with food, or as directed by a qualified health practitioner. To minimize gastrointestinal side effect risk, slowly increase dose over a 2-week period. Use for a minimum of 1 week to see beneficial effects for mood balance and 2 weeks for the alleviation of fibromyalgia symptoms.     • I am currently taking .5mg of clonazepam in the evening and .25mg in the morning to help manage anxiety/panic attacks. I've also been diagnosed with IBS, which I manage with dicetel (50mg twice daily during flareups). I also have a 8mm hemangioma on my liver. I have just been prescribed tryfonia max (100 mg twice daily) to help manage my anxiety. Is it okay to continue taking the clonazepam while taking the tryfonia? Im concerned about overmedicating. I'd also like to avoid going the antidepressant route, which I've tried before (Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor). I had to stop taking these after the 4th day of treatment as I had major digestive issues (nausea, loss of apetite, increased anxiety). So essentially, I'm asking if I can use the tryfonia instead of clonazepam and if it can help avoid antidepressants. Looking forward to your response.
