    Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) are essential amino acids key for protein synthesis and energy production. BCAAs are 35 to 40% of body protein and 14% of amino acids in skeletal muscle. One key BCAA is leucine, which the body needs 1 to 12 grams of daily. BCAA supplements can help treat liver failure, catabolic disease states, and improve exercise performance.

    Leucine levels are significantly lower after exercise because BCAA is increasingly metabolized in muscle tissue during exercise. Using leucine or BCAA supplements can prevent low BCAA levels caused by exercise and improve BCAA levels in muscles. Since BCAAs are not easily destroyed in the liver it is effective at consistently improving blood and tissues BCAA concentration.

    Leucine & Protein Synthesis: Leucine improves protein synthesis via various independent mechanisms including improved insulin secretion. In studies of humans at rest it slows protein breakdown, but does not always improve protein synthesis. There have been positive results of BCAA improving protein synthesis and/or reducing protein breakdown in exercising humans, but there are also some studies with no positive results. While leucine is important for promoting protein sythesis, it is best taken with other BCAAs to maintain a balance with valine and isoleucine BCAA levels. Grow and food intake is reduced is leucine is taken alone.

    BCAAs & Exercise: BCAAs can benefit athletes when used before or during workouts. For one, it can provide a fuel supply that does not deplete muscle and liver glycogen stores. Some studies found it to improve glygogen concentration, although others found it ineffective. BCAA can also slow CNS fatigue by limiting serotonin buildup in the brain and thus increase exercise performance. However, study results on whether BCAAs improve human exercise performance are varied and it seems overall it minimally if at all improves performance. Although, it might fight immunosuppression prolonged exercise can cause and reduce incidences of upper respiratory tract infections in endurance athletes.

    Are BCAA supplements a must?: BCAA can be beneficial for athletes, however it is uncertain whether it is truly better than protein and/or carbohydrate intake. Studies seem to show that it does not add much benefit when bodybuilders and strength trainers already consume adequate amounts of protein, especially before and after exercise, and carbs during prolonged exercise. BCAA is mainly useful when calorie intake must be limited or protein intake is too low. The CNS fatigue reduction is also unique to BCAA supplementation.
