  1. NOW Horny Goat Weed Review review by AstroNutrition In-House Review on 2/19/2011
    Rating

Horny goat weed is the common name for several related herbs from the Epimedium genus. The name refers to a Chinese goat herder discovering that his goats engaged in extreme sexual activity when they ate certain plants. Thus it is traditionally an aphrodisiac herb, but it is also used for treating fatigue, lower back pain, menstrual irregularities, and hypertension.

The most researched aspect of horny goat weed is icariin, which is also believed to be the most active part of horny goat weed. Icariin is a flavonol with a variety of capabilities. For one, it is a natural Viagra in that it helps relax the blood vessels in penile tissue. This increases blood flow and the longevity of an erection. However, it is likely not quite as powerful as Viagra type drugs.

Bodybuilding supplements sometimes contain horny goat weed becaue it is thought to work as a testosterone booster. However, the research has only been done on rats. More research including human clinical trials need to be done before it can be truly recommended as a testosterone booster that can improve athletic performance.

There are other possible benefits of icariin or horny goat weed, but most of the research has only been done using rats or mice or in-vitro. Some possible benefits include it possessing antioxidant, neuroprotective, antidepressant, and anti-aging effects.

While horny goat weed is often considered a male enhancer, it also has compounds that cause estrogenic effects. For this reason, studies have found it can decreaes bone loss in animals with post-menopausal osteoporosis. There is also one human study down in China that shows it might also be able to treat osteoporosis in humans.

Horny goat weed can be taken in the form of tablets, bulk powders, and capsules. It is often included with other known aphrodisiac herbs in male enhancement supplements. The good quality supplements possess extracts that are standardized for at least 10% icariin.

There is very little evidence of any major side effects caused by using horny goat weed. However, it is best for pregnant or lactating women to not take it.
