    Rating
    5 5

Lycopene belongs to the carotenoid family of phytochemicals. One major source of it is tomatoes. Carotenoids are plant pigments that work with other chemicals in the body, although they are not exactly nutrients. Lycopenes (a red pigment) are one of the more commonly known carotenoids. Another is beta-carotene, which is an orange pigment.

Lycopene is an antioxidant. Thus it binds with free radicals and prevents them from being destructive. Free radicals are oxygen molecules that are unstable due to having unpaired electrons. They are caused by exercise, smoking, pollution, and other environmental conditions. Free radicals can be quite damaging as they are unstable toxic molecules. Antioxidants; such as lycopene, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and vitamin C; bind to them and make them stable stopping the damage.

Lycopene’s antioxidant capabilities are believed to make it useful in fighting and preventing cancer, especially prostate cancer, as cancer is often related to free radical damage. One Harvard University study found that lycopene consumption was directly related to reduced prostate cancer occurrence. High levels of lycopene consumption showed a 21% lower risk of prostate cancer. Eating ten or more tomato-based products a week was related to a 35% lower risk of prostate cancer.

Lycopene consumption has also been found to reduce the risk of stomach and lung cancers. It reduces the incidence of skin cancer by protecting the skin from being damaged by prolonged sun exposure. Additionally, it might also help prevent heart disease. One study also found a 60mg daily dose of lycopene lowered LDL cholesterol levels 14% on average after being taken for a 3-month period.

Lycopene is better absorbed by the body when the tomatoes are processed by heat. For this reason, tomato sauce and soup provide more absorbed lycopene than raw tomatoes. 100 grams of tomato paste provides 6.5mg of lycopene compared to only 3.1mg in 100 grams of raw tomato. Other good sources of lycopene include pink grapefruit (3.4mg per 100 grams) and watermelon (4.1mg per 100 grams). Other red colored fruits and veggies also contain lycopene.

Lycopene supplements are increasingly popular due to them helping prevent cancer. The best dosage has yet to be determined, but most of the studies on the benefits use a 4 to 6.5mg daily dose.

Lycopene supplements of up to 12mg are proven safe with no major side effects reported. However, some brands might include substances that some people are sensitive to.
