While MSM is a natural component of almost all fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat, food-processing methods reduce sulfur levels, making supplementation more important than ever. NOW® MSM is tested to meet a minimum 99.7% purity.

MSM Review Review by AstroNutrition In-House Review
Rating Methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) is a natural compound found in plants and animals. It is a type of sulfur that possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities.
Natural levels of MSM are highest in infancy and reduce as one ages. MSM is found in a variety of dietary sources including whole fruits, vegetables, grains, and milk. Hence it is important to consume a whole foods diet to maintain healthy MSM levels. MSM can also be received from supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin supplements used for joint support especially by athletes.
MSM is derived from sulfur, which living organisms all have. MSM is an active form of sulfur in the body, as it acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
MSM is important for the production of healthy cells. Without new healthy cells being produced, the body is more prone to illness, pain, and injury. In order for cells to continue to regenerate it is important for the body to maintain an adequate supply of MSM.
MSM is a key aspect of teeth, bones, and connective tissues. Additionally, it is has a key role in carbohydrate metabolism. MSM’s sulfur also creates the proteins the make muscles, skin, and hair. Without this form of sulfur, insulin production slows. For this reason, MSM might be beneficial for diabetics. Perhaps even effective enough to decrease the necessity of synthetic insulin injections.
MSM is able to bind to free radicals and thus reverse cell damage and improve the immune system in order for the body to heal itself. MSM can also protect the stomach lining by controlling acidity and keeping parasites from residing there. It might also detoxify blood and improve circulation. Additionally, it decreases inflammation and stops muscle damage.
MSM is also believed to increase muscle flexibility and help wound heal following surgery. Research has found MSM aids in relieving arthritis pain, controlling cystitis, and treating allergies. One human study found it significantly helped relieve pain in patients with knee pain caused by osteoarthritis.
It might also treat bladder infections, as the FDA approved dimethyl sulfoxide does this and in the body it converts to MSM.
MSM has no known major side effects, although some find it irritates their stomach. Some with this problem can tolerate in smaller doses, though. It is best to take the lowest effective dose, which is usually 2 to 3 grams daily. (Posted on 2/20/11)
