  1. NOW Glutathione Review review by AstroNutrition In-House Review on 2/18/2011
    Rating

Glutathione is a protein that the liver produces. It is made up of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. It is among the most potent antioxidants the human body makes. It protects cells from being damaged by free radicals produced during normal cell oxidation. Thus it improves the immune system.

Glutathione helps remove a variety of toxins such as ones related to heavy metals, cigarette smoke, alcohol, radiation, and cancer chemotherapy. It detoxifies the lungs, liver, and intestinal tract. Additionally, Glutathione improves carbohydrate metabolism and keeps oxidized fats from collecting in arteries. Thus it lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease occurring.

Glutathione works to eliminate oxygen molecules before they damage cells. Additionally, it is a key part of the enzymes glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-tranferase, which are help eliminate toxins from the body. On the cellular level glutathione prevents oxidation from damaging the tissues in the brain, heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, eyes, and skin. It can also work as an anti-cancer agent by targeting and eliminating carcinogens from the body, especially the liver.

Glutathione is key in keeping the body from being affected by aging. However, the levels decline as the body ages. The lower the levels of glutathione are, the more easily the effects of aging occur. Glutathione levels are not only lowered as one ages, but also when one is ill or constantly exposed to heavy pollution.

Signs of glutathione deficiency include coordination and balance problems, as the nervous system is affected by the deficiency. Deficiency also compromises the immune system making one more susceptible to illness.

Thus glutathione supplements are often taken to promote the body’s natural process of eliminating toxins. However, the benefits of such supplementation are not back up by much clinical evidence.

Some nutritionists believe it is better to take amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine to promote the body’s ability to create glutathione. This includes using DHEA supplements to improve natural glutathione production.

Glutathione levels can also be raised through eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables containing high amounts of glutathione, such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Note that cooking destroys the glutathione, so they should be eaten raw or slightly steamed.

Glutathione levels can also be improved by using high quality whey protein supplements.

There are also some nutrients you can take that improve the body’s absorption of glutathione, such as B2 and fish oil.
